Moon phases and tides

Bring your observing notebook. We will explain moon phases and how they connect to tides of the earth, and learn how to predict tides and phases as a function of time. There is a nice summary page in the text, on page 28 I believe.

During the lesson you will learn the following vocabulary
waxing
waning
crescent
gibbous
first quarter
third quarter
full
new

tide
spring tide
neap tide
Newton's law of gravity (1st pass)

Plus how to predict the position of the moon in the sky and thus predict the tides.

sundial confusion, new due dates

My original due date said:
Sundials are due on October 24 for odd-days and 25 for even days.

Turns out October 24 is even. Therefore the new due dates are:

EVEN October 26
ODD October 27

That should fix it.

Sundial instructions complete; the analemma; planisphere questions

We pick up loose ends from several days in class by looking at the planisphere questions.

Then we will finish the explanation of the analemma, which leads us to the final design for our sundials.

We will finalize the sundial design and make the due date.
